The Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever opened up the 2025 WNBA season on Saturday, and that meant only one thing: Angel Reese vs. Caitlin Clark.
The two players showed exactly why they were No. 1 and No. 2 in the WNBA Rookie of the Year race, with Reese going for a double-double: 12 points, 17 rebounds, and an assist, while Clark put up a triple-double: 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.
The Fever went on to win 93–58, but the main storylines weren’t about the players’ performances. Instead, attention shifted to a third-quarter incident where Clark sent Reese to the floor and was assessed a Flagrant 1 foul, while Reese received a technical for her reaction — as well as to the inappropriate fan behavior during the game.
On Sunday, Reese’s aunt took to social media, calling for a "statement or apology" in response to what she described as "disgusting behavior from Fever fans toward Angel Reese." One of the people she directed the message to was WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert.
"Good morning, world!" Reese's aunt wrote. "I was hopeful in waking up this morning and finding statements of apology from the @wnba @indianafever @wnbacommish or even @s_whitej2 speaking on the disgusting behavior from Fever fans towards Angel Reese during the game versus the Chicago Sky. Making monkey noises at a Black woman should never be tolerated and Dave Portnoy should have been escorted out and banned from any future game. Prove to all of us you're committed and stand by your "No Space For Hate" campaign!"
Reese’s aunt made the post just hours before the WNBA released its statement. Here’s what it said:
"The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms — they have no place in our league or in society," the statement read. "We are aware of the allegations and are looking into the matter."
Despite what transpired on Saturday, Reese has no choice but to move forward, with her team set to face the defending WNBA champion New York Liberty on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
