NEW DELHI: Veteran
BJP MP Bishupada Ray
, representing the only parliamentary seat from the
Andaman and Nicobar Islands
, lost his temper in
Lok Sabha
on Tuesday, when the
Zero Hour
ended without him getting a chance to raise an issue related to his constituency.
Ray’s party colleagues had to rush in to cool him down, with Ray standing up in his seat in the fourth row of the treasury benches and reacting angrily, his ire appearing to be primarily directed at BJP chief whip Sanjay Jaiswal, seated in the same row.
Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijuju
, senior party MPs Ravi Shankar Prasad, Jagadambika Pal and Nishikant Dubey rushed towards him in an attempt to calm him down, while members from the opposition benches taking a swipe at the treasury benches, just as the discussion on the demands for grants had begun at 1pm in Lok Sabha. The commotion continued for barely five minutes before Ray left the House in a huff. Ray had reacted in a similar in an earlier session in the House.
Ray later told the TOI that he has been trying to raise issues related to Andaman and Nicobar in the House but was never given the opportunity to do it. “Things are in a bad shape in the islands and the government is not paying any attention to it… everything is gone… I have been trying to raise the issues in every session,” he said, while returning to the House after 5.30 pm when he said he been called back to raise the matters that he has been asking for.
As he started shouting sitting on the treasury benches, members' attention turned towards him. Rijiju rushed to him and tried to calm him down. Ray, with a bunch of papers in hand, appeared agitated over his request not being entertained. While Pal asked him to calm down, Ray reacted sharply.
Opposition MPs took a swipe at the treasury benches over Ray's outburst. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi asking the chair to give time to Ray to speak, saying "his voice is being suppressed," Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi asking the chair to calm the House down as “the noise was coming from the treasury benches.”
Ray was back in the House after he left it soon after Zero Hour and was seen countering Congress MPs during the discussion on the supplementary demands for grants, excess grants and the Manipur Budget.
