Brewers Prospect Notebook: Top Prospects Returning Soon, Breakout Stars Promoted

When the big league team is struggling in Milwaukee, more attention gets put on the happenings down in the minor leagues. The Brewers have to have a heavy focus on developing players because that's the best way for them to build a consistent winner like they have. They can't afford to buy free agents constantly due to their market and budget constraints.

Periodically, we like to check in on the top prospects in the Brewers system, who is making a name for themselves, and who is on the move. Athlon Sports caught up with Brewers Senior Vice President Tom Flanagan, who oversees the farm system.

Spring Training-Milwaukee Brewers at Los Angeles Angels

Triple-A Nashville

- Two of the Brewers top five prospects, Jeferson Quero and Tyler Black, are on schedule to return to Triple-A Nashville next week. They'll spend the rest of this week on their rehab assignment with the ACL Brewers. Quero is returning from a hamstring injury and Black suffered a hamate fracture toward the end of spring training.

- Anthony Siegler was red-hot for the Sounds, hitting .281 with six homers, ten steals, and a .946 OPS. They tried him out at third base and then he suffered a finger injury sliding into a base.

"He got some positive news today. It's like a small fracture, but it's probably a much shorter (timeline). So it's not gonna be like four-to-six weeks, probably a couple weeks. Still, it's one of those where they say he can do it to tolerance, but it's on his right hand, so it's like is he comfortable gripping the bat, making throws?" Flanagan said

-Jacob Misiorowski has been lighting up Triple-A and radar guns this season. In a recent start, he hit 103 MPH. He has a 1.46 ERA and appears to be getting closer and closer to a promotion, but when will it come?

"I think Miz realizes he's putting it together now where it's outing to outing it's getting a little better even each time. So I think that's a win for everybody. So it's just a matter of when, how long do you let fester where it continues to build versus wasting bullets?" Flanagan said

When the Brewers do promote Misiorowski, they'd like to have him stay up and not be in a position where he's yo-yoing between Triple-A and the Majors.

Double-A Biloxi

- Cooper Pratt and Brock Wilken are the big infield prospects in Biloxi that the Brewers are probably waiting on. With the big league club struggling at shortstop and third base, many look to these two as potential options to solve the problem. However, the Brewers aren't rushing these two.

On Pratt, Flanagan said, "Pratt had that little taste of (Double-A) last year, so I think for him, he could certainly get some more runway."

On Wilken, Flanagan said, "The power's back and he's just doing a lot of things we'd want to see. So it's just a matter of, how big is the gap to Triple-A versus is there incentive to, the Southern League is not a good (environment), tough weather, it's a grind. I think there's arguments to be made on both sides. I think there's probably more of an argument right now to let him continue to build confidence there."

- 2B/OF prospect Dylan O'Rae has yet to play this season due to a wrist injury that is expected to require surgery. The surgery would put an end to his 2025 season with a 4-to-6 month recovery timeline. The surgery could happen as soon as this week.

- Mike Boeve recently returned to action from offseason shoulder surgery and has been strictly DHing for the Shuckers as he builds back up. He's expected to start playing the field in "hopefully the next week or two" according to Flanagan. He'll likely start at first base to help protect his shoulder.

High-A Wisconsin

- The Brewers are promoting 2024 4th round pick Marco Dinges to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. In 26 games for Low-A Carolina, Dinges hit .353/.500/.576 with eight doubles, three homers, and four stolen bases. Dinges was ranked 42nd on Athlon's Top 50 Brewers prospects list heading into the season.

- As a result of Dinges' promotion, catcher Matt Wood is being promoted from Wisconsin to Double-A Biloxi. Wood has a .374 OBP with 20 walks and just 18 strikeouts.

Low-A Carolina

- Luis Pena exited Sunday's game for the Carolina Mudcats early after a hard collision at first base, but it's good news on him.

"Yeah, he came out. But no, so far no concussion. He didn't lose consciousness. Something like that, just looked ugly." Flanagan said.

- 2024 first round pick Braylon Payne has missed the last couple of games for the Mudcats with stiffness in his lower back/hip area. He'll rest on the bench for most of this week to let it heal up before being put back in the lineup. It wasn't a serious enough injury to warrant an IL stint in the Brewers eyes.

- The Brewers are promoting OF Jose Anderson from the ACL Brewers to Low-A Carolina. He was ranked #41 on our Top 50 prospects list coming into the year. Anderson has three homers and seven extra-base hits already in just 10 games in the ACL. He has a 1.217 OPS and will be the 3rd member of the Brewers 2024 international signing class to reach Low-A.
