Brighton vs Newcastle live updates — by Nick Mendola
Verbruggen save!
The Brighton keeper may be the Man of the Match, saving a Callum Wilson shot that took a turn off LEwis Dunk.
Brighton subs
Diego Gomez and Brajan Gruda for Minteh and O’Riley.
Nine minutes stoppage!
Can the Magpies find a winner?
Alexander Isak penalty goal — Brighton 1-1 Newcastle (89th minute)
The Swede rolls it opposite Verbruggen’s dive.
Newcastle penalty, shouldn’t be overturned
Fabian Schar cranks a free kick and Yasin Ayari swats it down with his arm.
Magpies sub
Willock comes off for Callum Wilson in the 75th minute.
Newcastle penalty overturned
Willock is chopped down by Van Hecke, but was there contact?
Nope. Yellow to Willock. Goal kick to Brighton.
Brighton double sub
The Seagulls have been under pressure and Hurzeler will make two subs to try and settle it down.
Adingra exits for Joel Veltman, and Hinshelwood’s out in favor of Yasin Ayari.
Into the 70th minute with Brighton up 1-0.
Newcastle penalty overturned by VAR
Gordon feels a kick on his shin from Lamptey.
He hits the deck, and the subs have combined to produce a chance for Newcastle from the spot.
Or have they? The foul is on the edge of the box. No pen.
Anthony Gordon enters the fray
Jacob Murphy exits the game after sending a shot well over the goal, and Anthony Gordon joins Alexander Isak and Harvey Barnes atop the Magpies’ 4-3-3.
Wieffer subbed off
Tariq Lamptey has taken Wieffer’s place.
Brighton really lucky.
Wieffer dodges red card
Craig Pawson could’ve easily shown a second yellow to Wieffer, who caught the ball with one leg but also hit Sandro Tonali with two on a sliding challenge.
But VAR wasn’t going to award a yellow, and it’s not a red. Fabian Hurzeler will likely be readying a sub at right back.
Brighton lead 1-0 in the 53rd minute.
No changes at the break
Can the Magpies rally for three points, or even one?
Halftime — Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 Newcastle United
The Seagulls continue to vex the Magpies, who will feel the goal was the only real concession they made at the back.
Newcastle have had the ball but been frustrated with their choices in the final third.
Mats Wieffer delivering for Hurzeler
It was a surprise to see Wieffer at right back but he’s been good at both ends.
Obviously the assist stands out but he’s doing relatively well with the threat of Willock and Barnes on the left (although both have been lively).
Yankuba Minteh goal — Brighton 1-0 Newcastle (28th minute)
He got a good bounce to deliver the opportunity, but Minteh’s shot is beautiful and Brighton are ahead before the half-hour mark.
Minteh blasts Brighton ahead of Newcastle
Yankuba Minteh scores against his former team yet again as he smashes his effort into the corner of the goal to give Brighton a 1-0 lead against Newcastle at the Amex.
Joe Willock opts for wonder
Willock tears into a long dribble down the left and curls his run toward goal.
Carlos Baleba shows impressive speed to close down Willock’s options, and the former Arsenal man tries for a worldie with the outside of his right foot and he’s honestly not too far off!
0-0, 27'.
First quarter-hour heavy Newcastle
The final ball hasn’t been there and Bart Verbruggen has his 18 under control but Newcastle are certainly holding the ball and working it with intent.
Brighton have had a couple of promising counterattacking spells, but Newcastle have dealt well with them.
Yankuba Minteh injury
An early call to the field for trainers as ex-Newcastle man Yankuba Minteh is down following a 50/50 with Joe Willock.
Looks like he’ll continue after a quick trip off the field.
Barnes again
Harvey Barnes had been kept out of the Starting XI often prior to Anthony Gordon’s injury, and now Barnes’ exemplary play is keeping Gordon from returning to the unit.
The big notes are Joe Willock taking the injured Joelinton’s place in Newcastle’s usually robust midfield, and Fabian Hurzeler turning to midfielder Mats Wieffer at right back.
Newcastle always seem to have their hands full with Brighton. Let’s see how they respond away to a tough foe with big stakes for both clubs’ seasons.
Brighton lineup
Verbruggen, Estupinan, Van Hecke, Dunk, Wieffer, Baleba, O’Riley, Hinshelwood, Adingra, Minteh, Welbeck
Newcastle lineup
Pope, Trippier, Burn, Schar, Livramento, Tonali, Guimaraes, Willock, Murphy, Barnes, Isak
Brighton vs Newcastle preview — by Joe Prince-Wright
Brighton scored twice late on at home against West Ham last weekend to seal a dramatic 3-2 win which was huge for them in their quest for European qualification. That was the first win in six for Fabian Hurzeler’s side and the German coach was emotional on the sidelines as he celebrated the victory. The Seagulls are in the hunt for an eighth-place finish which would almost certainly secure European football for next season.
Newcastle are in even better form, winning six of their last seven in the Premier League as they thumped Ipswich Town 3-0 at home last weekend. For that win against Ipswich Eddie Howe returned to the sidelines as he continues to recover from pneumonia. Newcastle are right in the mix of the intense scrap for Champions League qualification and after this game against Brighton they host Chelsea and Everton and also head to Arsenal.
Brighton team news, focus
Van Hecke is back fit which is huge for Brighton’s defense, while Hurzeler has so many attacking options to choose from and Mitoma jumped off the bench to spark their comeback win last weekend. Baleba and Ayari both whipped in stunning strikes from distance in that big win so Newcastle will be wary of giving them too much space outside the box.
OUT: Ferdi Kadioglu (toe), Georginio Rutter (ankle), Jason Steele (shoulder), James Milner (thigh) | QUESTIONABLE: Adam Webster (thigh)
Newcastle team news, focus
Joelinton being out in midfield is a blow for Newcastle as the balance he provides alongside Tonali and Guimaraes is so important to their high-energy approach. Joe Willock is likely to start in midfield in Joelinton’s place, while Sven Botman came off the bench against Ipswich last weekend after a long spell out through injury and the center back is pushing for a start.
OUT: Joelinton (knee), Matt Targett (hamstring), Lewis Hall (foot - out for season), Jamaal Lascelles (knee)
Brighton vs Newcastle prediction
This feels like it could be a fun one as both teams know they need to win to boost their European hopes and their default setting is to attack and entertain. Brighton 2-2 Newcastle.
