Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin provided a fresh update on where things stand between the organization and upcoming free agent forward Brock Boeser.
According to Allvin, via Patrick Johnston of The Province, the Canucks are still exploring the possibility of re-signing forward Boeser before he reaches unrestricted free agency on July 1.
Speaking during a season ticket holder event, Allvin addressed questions surrounding Boeser’s status and the team’s offseason plans.
In an interesting twist, Allvin signaled a potential change in tone from earlier this year, when the two sides couldn't agree to a contract extension.
“We’re going to see if there’s a chance to keep Brock Boeser,” Allvin said.
Boeser’s name was one of the most mentioned at the trade deadline, but ultimately wasn't moved.
“If I told you what I was offered for Brock Boeser, I think I would have to run out of here,” Allvin said on March 11. “Because you would not believe me.”
TSN's Darren Dreger reported ahead of the deadline that the Canucks offered him a five-year contract, while according to The Fourth Period, "Boeser’s camp have been pushing for a seven-to-eight-year agreement," thus the disagreement.
The winger is coming off a 25-goal, 50-point campaign, a step down from his career-best 40-goal season in 2023–24.
Boeser, the Canucks' longest-serving player, spoke about his future at the end of the regular season when it was confirmed the Canucks were going to miss the playoffs.
“Honestly, (an extension) is unlikely at this point,” Boeser said. “It sucks, it’s unfortunate. I’m just trying to play good hockey, and then I’ll worry about everything after that. We all know it’s been a roller coaster of a year.”
Allvin and the Canucks still have time to negotiate an extension before the July 1 free agency window opens, with Boeser having a window to sign it between the end of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and that date.
