Celtics Make Positive Game 5 Injury Announcement After Jayson Tatum News

The Celtics will be without Jayson Tatum for the remainder of the team's playoff run, and most likely for all of 2025-26 to boot, after he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in the Game 4 loss to the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Monday.

The team's statement on Twitter/X read: "Jayson Tatum today underwent successful surgery to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon. No timetable is currently available for his return, but he is expected to make a full recovery. Further updates will be provided when appropriate."

But there is not much time for Boston to mourn the Tatum injury, not when the Game 4 loss has pushed them into a 3-1 series deficit, putting them on the brink of elimination after the team won a championship in 2024. Coming back from that deficit is not impossible, but it is improbable, especially with the Celtics missing their star player.

Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla watches from the sideline as they take on the Orlando Magic during game five of first round for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at TD Garden.

The Celtics did, though, get a sliver of positive news on the injury front on Tuesday, though. Tatum will be out for Game 5, obviously, but sharpshooting forward Sam Hauser is now listed as "probable" on the official injury report the team filed with the NBA

Hauser has been out since Game 1 of the series, when he played just four minutes before injuring his right ankle. According to league guidelines, listing Hauser as "probable" means the Celtics feel he has a 75% chance of playing.

Hauser averaged 8.5 points this year and made 41.6% of his 3-pointers. Though he is not a replacement for Tatum, Hauser is an option for coach Joe Mazzulla and is capable of catching fire from the perimeter, and there is a chance he could see significant minutes should he make his return to the court in Game 5.

Game 5 will be played in Boston on Wednesday, with a tipoff at 7 p.m. ET.
