China on Wednesday urged both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint following India's deadly strikes on Pakistani targets, expressing concern over the rising tensions.

"China regrets India's military action this morning and is concerned about the current developments," a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry in Beijing said in a statement.

"We call on both India and Pakistan to prioritize peace and stability, remain calm and exercise restraint, and avoid actions that further complicate the situation."

While ties between China and India remain strained due to long-standing border disputes in the Himalayas, Beijing maintains close economic relations with Pakistan.

Through its Belt and Road Initiative, China is funding road and rail infrastructure projects in Pakistan aimed at connecting western China's Xinjiang region with the Arabian Sea.

Past attacks by militant groups in south-western Pakistan have also targeted Chinese workers. Beijing reiterated its opposition to all forms of terrorism.
