Comment Adds Fuel to Subway Series Anticipation

A broadcast booth moment hints at the noise still to come.

The Subway Series doesn’t begin for another 12 days, but clearly the SNY broadcast booth is warming up for it.

On Sunday during the Mets’ game in St. Louis, SNY analyst Keith Hernandez offered a now-familiar dig aimed squarely at Yankee Stadium. After a Mets batter lofted a shallow fly ball to right field, Hernandez quipped, “Needless to say, that would've been a home run in Yankee Stadium.”

Former New York Mets first baseman and current SNY analyst Keith Hernandez was honored by the Mets in July of 2022.

The Bronx ballpark’s short right-field porch has been a talking point for years, but usually when teams are actually in the Bronx.

With the Mets set to visit Yankee Stadium on May 16–18, and Juan Soto returning for the first time since leaving the Yankees in free agency, the rivalry already feels heated.

Soto’s record-setting 15-year, $765 million deal with the Mets sent shockwaves through the league this winter. It also stirred plenty of bitterness in the Bronx and even some in Queens.

The 26-year-old outfielder’s brief but dominant stint in pinstripes only deepened the sting. Now, he’ll walk back into Yankee Stadium as a visiting star, wearing orange and blue.

He has already told reporters he is expecting the worst when he returns. Yankees fans have already given a glimpse of what is in store.

Whether Hernandez intended to fan the flames or was just riding an old punchline, the timing couldn’t be better for the Mets. For Yankees fans, it may just add another reason to pack the Stadium and make their voices heard when Soto steps to the plate.
