Erik Fosshage wins Mexico Beach Council Member Group 2 race

MEXICO BEACH (WMBB) — 3 Mexico Beach Officials were supposed to be on the ballot Tuesday. Two of them ran unopposed and automatically got another term. The third stepped down.

Group 2 council member Jerry Smith did not run for reelection. Erik Fosshage and Gary Cox both filed to run for the seat.

Cox picked up 40.2% of the vote. Fosshage received 59.7%. Erik Fosshage wins the Mexico Beach Council Member Group 2 race.

Fosshage received the good news that he is now Mexico Beach’s newest city council member, surrounded by close friends and family at a watch party at his home.

Fosshage will now fill Jerry Smith’s seat, who has held the position since 2019 but decided not to run for re-election this year.

He expressed his gratitude to everyone who showed up and cast their votes in his name on Tuesday.

He also ensured all of those who voted for his opponent, Gary Cox, that he will work for them and do everything in his power to preserve the beauty and charm of Mexico Beach.

Fosshage expressed his excitement for beginning his term on the city council, and he already has several items on his agenda that he would like to address.

“We have a number of long-term projects that still need to be fulfilled. For example, we need to build a new city center. That’s going to be the location of the city government, as well as fire and police. Everybody wants our pier back. The city has been working really hard with the federal government to continue that permitting process. One day soon, we’re excited to have our pier back, and I look forward to maybe having that come to fruition in the next two years,” said Fosshage. “I’m just, again, excited to be able to serve Mexico Beach for the first time. I look forward to working with all of the existing councilmen as well as the residents here in Mexico Beach, to make sure that we continue to keep our small town charm and move our city forward.”

Cox originally agreed to an interview with us.

But after the results were posted, he cancelled.

The group 2 seat is the only change to the council this election year.

Both Mayor Richard Wolff and Group 3 council member Linda Hamilton qualified without opposition and automatically received another term.
