As Elon Musk takes on an increasingly high-profile role as the head of the Trump administration’s new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), debate is growing over how politics is affecting Tesla Inc. (TSLA).
While the electric carmaker’s stock has gained 45% over the past 12 months, it's dipped 28% so far this year and is mostly unchanged since the November election.
For ETF investors, the field of opportunities to bet strongly for or against the stock is wide open.
The Tradr 2X Short Tesla Daily ETF (TSLQ), which is a daily-reset trading strategy betting against the price of Tesla stock, is up 78% this year.
The flipside of that trade would be the T-Rex 2X Long Tesla Daily Target ETF (TSLT), which underscores the double-edged sword of these kinds of single-stock ETFs with a 56% decline this year.
But beyond the most aggressive ways to bet for or against Tesla stock, a screening of etf.com data show allocations to the carmaker spread across 355 ETFs in varying degrees.
With a weighting of nearly 46%, TSLT stands out as the ETF with the largest allocation to TSLA. The most shares are held in the Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (QQQ), with 36 million of the total 273 million held by ETFs. Tesla makes up 4% of the $329 billion ETF.
For Tesla bulls, there are also plenty of ways to gain exposure without making big heart-racing bets.
The Mast Global Battery Recycling and Production ETF (EV) has a comfortable but significant 9% weight in TSLA.
Tesla is also a regular holding among the sustainable and ESG categories. TSLA represents 7.7% of the Invesco MSCI Sustainable Future ETF (ERTH) and 8% of the God Bless America ETF (YALL), which some might describe as the opposite of an ESG strategy.
For those investors looking to shun Tesla altogether for political or other reasons, a good place to start would be the etf.com tools section, where the 355 ETFs with exposure to Tesla can be screened according to a variety of criteria.
Near the bottom of the list there’s the Nuveen Sustainable Core ETF (NSCR), which has just a 0.05% allocation to TSLA.
Right behind it, with a 0.07% allocation, is the Invesco Russell 1000 Equal Weight ETF (EQAL).
