Former New York Jets linebacker Haason Reddick is already causing drama.
For most NFL franchises, the saga between Haason Reddick and the New York Jets would have been the major storyline of the season. Unfortunately for the Jets, the 2024 season was full of sideshow attractions that, for some, led to Reddick's situation flying a bit under the radar.
2024 was nothing short of disastrous for the Jets and Reddick. The Jets traded for Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles, hoping to rework his contract and add his perennial double-digit sack contributions to their already mega-talented defense.
In typical Jets fashion, it wasn't as easy as it sounds. Reddick held out for nearly half the season, finally getting a reworked deal midseason, and Reddick had the worst year of his NFL career.
In 10 games and two starts, Reddick had just 14 tackles, only two for-loss, and one sack. Reddick had as many sacks as Bruce Hector, who played 118 defensive snaps for the Jets last season after getting called up from the practice squad for six games.
Still, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Reddick to a one-year, $14 million deal, hoping to revitalized the disgruntled Reddick. it didn't take long for red flags to appear for Reddick, who was notably absent from the Buccaneers' first open-media OTAs this week.
These practices are voluntary, but most teams have recorded full attendance by this point in the offseason. Head coach Todd Bowles didn't inspire confidence with his newest defensive addition, either
“I’m sure one of these days we’ll see him,” Bowles said, perhaps passive-aggressively.
Reddick's tenure with the Jets remained a footnote on the 2024 campaign from hell. The Jets traded for Reddick in April of 2024, and by August he had requested a trade from the Jets after missing the entirety of training camp. At the time, then-general manager Joe Douglas stated that the Jets would not trade Reddick, and that "he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report."
Come October, the Jets permitted Reddick to seek a trade, and five days later the two sides agreed on a reworked contract, ending his holdout. Reddick then played the least-productive football of his career, but he did earn himself a contract with the Buccaneers, paying him $14 million per sack he recorded with the Jets.
