Gear up for spring: REI members save up to 50% off clothing, footwear and more

Even as an avid skier and lover of winter, I am happy to see the temps rise and the sun out longer, though it means I have to start mowing the lawn again (hey, it's better than shoveling snow!). Spring is my favorite time of year, and for good reason: The trails in my home state of Colorado are snow-free for the first time in months, meaning my family and I are all set to lace up the hiking boots, throw our packs on our backs and hit the trail in search of wildflowers, mountain views and maybe a few leftover patches of snow to slide down. There's something about those first few warm weekends — when the air smells like pine, flowers and sunscreen — that feels like a fresh start.

Speaking of fresh starts, has your outdoor wardrobe looked a bit tattered lately? Maybe it's time to say sayonara to those worn-down boots or that hole-y jacket and snag some new gear. REI members can save an extra 25% on select REI Outlet trail gear with code OUTAPRIL25 through April 14th. That's an extra 25% on already discounted prices, meaning you can save up to 53% on these jackets, boots, socks, backpacks — everything you need to get out and enjoy some fresh air.

Not an REI member yet? No worries. You can snag a lifetime membership for just $30 — less than you’ll save on most of the items below.

Look up photos of me on my most memorable outdoor pursuits — summiting the tallest mountain in Australia, fly-fishing in Patagonia, off-roading through the forests of Washington and Canada — and you will find a Patagonia trucker hat on my head. I have yet to find a hat that fits me as well as Patagonia's does, and they last a long time too.

Terravia Trail Pants are my go-to for hikes in the Rockies. Even when it's warm enough to wear shorts, if I'm heading where the bugs might think I look like dinner, I throw these on — and not once have I thought they were too warm. With both black and blue on sale, they will match anything in your closet.

Capilene Cool Trail is a magical fabric ( and one that I am wearing while writing this article). It feels like a light cotton while wicking away sweat and keeping odor at bay like a full synthetic (it's made out of 100% polyester). From spring through fall, this material is what I choose to keep me cool, and at nearly 50% off it's a no-brainer for your closet.

The Merrell Moab is legendary, first made in 1982, but the original version can feel clunky, heavy and uncomfortable over long distances. While this update won't be breaking any ultralight footwear records, it is waterproof and more comfortable and lighter than its predecessor. A true upgrade for those wanting a bit more out of their hiking boots.

The temps may be rising but we're nowhere near summer yet, which means a good layering system is a must to keep those shivers away. Great for throwing on for your morning or after-dinner walks, this stretchy hoodie will block the wind without making you feel stuffy.

It happens every year: Warm weather comes around and fools us all into thinking that the cold is gone for good. Not today, Spring. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me 35 times, well, I'm just going to keep a lightweight jacket with me at all times in case the wind picks up. And for less than $70, this one from The North Face will do nicely.
