German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier praised the resilience of Ukrainians in a video address marking the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion.
"Three years have passed since the watershed moment that was
24 February 2022 – three years of suffering, violence and loss for the Ukrainian people," Steinmeier said. "Yet also three years of resolute defence of freedom and sovereignty."
The Ukrainian people were not fighting only for their territory, he noted. "They are fighting for democracy, for self-determination, for a free Europe – for all the values that for us, too, are fundamental."
He said Germany would continue to support Ukraine with humanitarian and military aid as well as protection for those who have fled the country. Berlin would also assist Ukraine in its reconstruction efforts.
"Ukraine is not alone," the German head of state added.
The anniversary is also being marked with numerous events across Germany to commemorate the victims of the war and send a message of peace. This includes demonstrations, prayer vigils and official commemorations.
