College basketball has always been about coaches, and the great ones always make their marks in March. That’s how they become legends, instantly recognizable when you see them on your TV screen.
Or are they?
The sport has seen an exodus of its standard bearers in recent years as many of the notable faces leading storied programs have retired. In just the last five years, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, North Carolina’s Roy Williams, Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, Villanova’s Jay Wright and Virginia’s Tony Bennett — all championship-winning coaches — have called it quits. Over that same span, the women’s game has absorbed the retirements of Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer and Notre Dame’s Muffet McGraw.
