Most Spanish trains remain out of service after nationwide power cut

Medium- and long-distance trains in Spain will remain out of service on Monday due to a nationwide power outage - even though electricity is being restored in some regions, the country's transport minister said.

"At this time it is not expected that medium- and long-distance service will resume today," Transport Minister Óscar Puente announced on the platform X.

Travellers will have to temporarily forego their journeys, Puente stated.

"We are working to restore power so that we can resume these services, but this will not be possible today," he added.

The power outage, which occurred around midday, has led to a complete shutdown of the rail network. According to the Spanish grid operator REE, power has since been restored in regions such as Catalonia, Aragon, the Basque Country, Galicia, Asturias, Navarre and Castile.

A massive blackout has swept across Spain and Portugal, causing widespread disruption to connectivity and traffic. Although power is gradually being restored, the outage has triggered significant complications throughout both countries. Eric Renom/ZUMA Press Wire/dpa
