Australia's New South Wales (NSW) Government has appointed a project team to advance planning on the A$265m ($168.76m) upgrade of Port Macquarie Base Hospital.
Turner and Townsend have been selected as the project managers, with Altus chosen as the cost manager after a competitive tender process.
Over the coming months, these teams will work with Health Infrastructure and the Mid-North Coast Local Health District to begin the early stages of planning.
The hospital upgrade aims to improve healthcare services for communities in Australia's Mid-North Coast region.
NSW health minister Ryan Park said: “I’m pleased to see work on this important project moving forward.
“This investment will result in the largest upgrade since Port Macquarie Base Hospital was built and will help ensure the hospital continues to support the needs of the Mid North Coast community for decades to come.”
The upgrade will focus on expanding the hospital's emergency and maternity departments and making 'essential' improvements to mechanical systems within the existing hospital structure.
Its full scope and construction timelines will be determined once the planning and design phase is complete and a builder has been selected.
The upgrade project is anticipated to create nearly 500 direct jobs and potentially thousands of indirect jobs during its duration.
Port Macquarie Labor spokesperson Cameron Murphy said: “There will be many opportunities for the community and staff to be involved throughout the planning of the redevelopment to help shape the upgrade of their local hospital.”
The infrastructure enhancement at Port Macquarie Base Hospital comes in addition to the recently completed A$33.97m helipad and car park project.
This project added a free street-level car park with more than 180 additional spaces to the hospital, as well as a rooftop helipad to improve emergency healthcare access.
