, /PRNewswire/ -- Obesity Care Week (OCW) returns for its annual global campaign aimed at raising awareness, educating and advocating for individuals affected by obesity. This year's theme, "Commit to Care," emphasizes the urgent need for accessible, affordable and compassionate care for individuals living with this complex disease.
Despite affecting more than 42% of U.S. adults and 19% of youth, obesity remains largely stigmatized and undertreated. Half of those with obesity report never discussing their weight with a healthcare professional, and only four in 10 patients say they've received weight counseling.
During OCW, the campaign will deliver daily education, advocacy resources and expert insights on obesity care. Supporters are encouraged to sign the "Commit to Care" Pledge at ObesityCareWeek.org, promoting awareness, advocacy and respect for individuals affected by obesity.
Advocates are also urged to support the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed rule, which aims to expand access to FDA-approved obesity medications under Medicare Part D—an essential step in improving healthcare outcomes for millions. "Obesity Care Week gives us the opportunity to shift the way society views obesity and treats people affected," said Joseph Nadglowski, President and CEO of the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC). "It's time for everyone to recognize obesity as a complex, chronic disease that merits treatment like any other health condition."
OCW is supported by Founding Champions, including the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance, The Obesity Society (TOS), American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA). It is also backed by more than 160 Champion organizations and is sponsored by: Diamond—Eli Lilly and Company; Silver—Novo Nordisk; Bronze—Regeneron; Patron—Amgen, Genentech; Supporter—Boehringer Ingelheim, Boston Scientific, Currax, Prosciento and Rhythm Pharmaceuticals.
It's time to change the way we care about obesity! Learn more, sign the pledge and Commit to Care at ObesityCareWeek.org.
