Bundesliga Europa League representatives VfB Stuttgart have confirmed their first summer signing. French right back Lorenz Assignon – as reported earlier in the week – will suit up for the Swabians next season. With a price tag of €11m, plus an additional €2m in bonuses, the 24-year-old hasn’t come cheap.
Assignon counts as Stuttgart’s most expensive defensive signing since Ozan Kabak in January 2019. Kabak too cost €11m at the time. Factoring in the bonuses, Assignon could be considered Stuttgart’s most expensive defensive signing ever. The newcomer’s VfB contract runs through 2028.
VfB sporting director Christian Gehnter was quick to point out that Assignon’s experience both in Ligue 1 and in the Premier League (at Burnley under current Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany rendered him worth the investment. Assignon himself noted that (perhaps due to his proximity to former VfB defender Anthony Rouault) he had done some scouting of the German club.
“Lorenz fits in very well with our playing philosophy with his footballing skills and dynamism,” Gehnter noted in a club statement. “He has proven his qualities in Ligue 1 and the Premier League in recent years and gained important experience. Lorenz has already reached a very high level in his game, and we are convinced that he will take further steps in his development with us.”
”I am very happy to be playing for VfB in the future,” the player himself added. “It is a club steeped in tradition with fantastic fans. I have watched several games on TV and like the way the team plays. I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead of me and want to do my part to ensure that VfB continues to be successful.“
