Ferris State running back transfer Kannon Katzer couldn’t shake the feeling he had during his official visit to West Virginia.
So, he followed his heart and committed to the Mountaineers.
“My intuition and gut was yelling at me to do so,” he said.
Katzer, 5-foot-8, 190-pounds, was not only impressed with the stadium and the facilities but the scenery being from Washington state.
In terms of the football side of things the Mountaineers had what he was looking for with the offense with the scheme as well as a head coach in Rich Rodriguez that is committed to running the ball.
“Coach valued how I can run out of the back field to catch passes and also run in-between the tackles efficiently,” he said.
The spread style offense is something that Katzer is familiar with during his previous stops which served to make the transition an easy one for him. He also was able to meet with not only Rodriguez, but a number of other assistants including senior offensive assistant Travis Trickett, running backs coach Larry Porter and assistant running backs coach Noel Devine.
“They originally hit me up back in February when I hit the portal,” he said.
But the biggest thing that caught Katzer’s attention was the culture that Rodriguez and his coaching staff are trying to put in place built around a blue-collar attitude and hard work.
“The discipline these coaches will require from us,” he said.
On top of West Virginia, Katzer visited a number of others including Oregon State, Massachusetts and Sacramento State while he had other visits planned but now has turned his entire attention to the next stop of his career in Morgantown.
Katzer started his career at Washington State as a walk-on before spending a season at Citrus College and then moving onto Ferris State. Last season with the Bulldogs he rushed for 1,128 yards and 11 touchdowns while averaging 8.8 per carry.
He also hauled in 21 catches for 301 yards and 3 scores.
The plan is to arrive at West Virginia in late May in order to start his career with the program May 27.
“Glad I found my way home,” he said.
