NEW DELHI:
Men in black and white
, accustomed to intense courtroom battles for safeguarding clients' interests, have got lured by the razzmatazz of slam-bang day-night cricket and are readying to don colourful attires to play the first-ever t20 advocates’ premier league.
The first
Supreme Court Advocates
on Record Association Cricket Premier League will kickstart with a match between CJI XI, comprising SC and
Delhi HC judges
, and
SCAORA
XI, comprising senior advocates and lawyers including DDCA president Rohan Jaitley at
Arun Jaitley stadium
in Delhi on Feb 23, association president Vipin Nair told TOI.
It was easy to float the idea of a
t20 cricket
tournament for advocates after the success of IPL and WPL. But selecting 120 advocates on record, a special category of lawyers who pass a tough examination to be entitled to file cases in the SC, for seven teams was not an easy task.
SCAORA vice-president Amit Sharma and secretary Nikhil Jai along with Nair knew the difficulties in financing the tournament as well as the seven teams that would participate. After finding enthusiasm among young lawyers, they approached senior advocates for sponsoring the teams.
Senior advocates D S Naidu, PB Suresh, Sajan Poovayya, Devadatt Kamat, Buddy Ranganathan, Sitesh Mukherjee and Chinmoy Sharma have readily agreed. The day-night white ball matches will be played under floodlights at various venues. The inaugural match between CJI XI and SCAORA XI will be telecast live, Nair said.
Special permission has been given for this match by the BCCI and the DDCA and the ground facilities are being provided free for SCAORA, he said, adding the association is in the process of creating two women AoR teams.
Till now there had always been an annual customary cricket match between Judges XI led by the CJI and SC Bar Association XI led by its president.
