Shilo Sanders Reveals Reason For Buccaneers Signing

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought in Shilo Sanders to help bolster their secondary in 2025.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had one of the worst pass defenses in the league last season under head coach Todd Bowles. They vowed to make sure they wouldn't go through that for another season.

Their solution? Focus heavily on the secondary in the draft. Tampa Bay drafted both Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish with their second and third round choices. They also signed Colorado safety Shilo Sanders as an undrafted free agent as well.

Sanders was the lesser known son of head coach Deion that helped turn Colorado into one of the most popular programs in the country. It was always a long shot for Shilo to hear his name called in the draft, but relished the opportunity of picking his new team as a UDFA.

So why the Buccaneers? The team already has an All-Pro safety on the roster in Antoine Winfield Jr., so it's not like there's playing time to be had right away.

To Sanders, though, the answer was simple.

"They gave me a chance before anyone so I’m forever grateful to the Buccaneers, and I’m just gonna do everything in my power to help this team win," Sanders said. "That’s all I want.

“Just look at the whole coaching staff. It’s a real supportive coaching staff. Everybody wants to see everybody do good. Even the guys on the team. I’ve just been talking to everybody, and everybody is cool. We all want to see each other win, and it’s just a great environment to thrive in.”

Bowles has a reputation of being an excellent defensive backs coach with plenty of experience in building strong defenses. That's the kind of coaching that a player like Sanders desperately needs at the NFL level.

One day he may very well be the kind of quality player in the backend that his father once was.
