NEW DELHI: Telangana government has announced that Telugu will be a compulsory subject for all students from classes 1 to 10 in schools across all boards, including CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other affiliated institutions, starting from the 2025-26 academic year.
This decision comes amid ongoing debates over the National Education Policy (NEP) introduced by the Centre in 2020, which has faced criticism, particularly from the Tamil Nadu government, for allegedly promoting the "imposition of Hindi."
Revanth Reddy-led Congress government has decided to fully implement the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act, which was originally introduced in 2018.
Although the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government enacted the law, it was not fully enforced due to various challenges.
To ensure effective implementation, the current government held meetings with school managements and decided to introduce Telugu as a mandatory subject for Classes 9 and 10 in CBSE, ICSE, and other board schools starting from the upcoming academic year.
CM Reddy also approved the use of the 'Simple Telugu' textbook, titled 'Vennela', to make learning easier for students whose mother tongue is not Telugu or who come from other states.
