We tried Amazon's bestselling spring dresses, but only a few impressed us

There's nothing quite like slipping into a cute dress on the year's first warm, sunny day. Whether it's a breezy caftan, a crisp shirtdress or a simple slip dress, you'll find me in these easy-breezy styles the second the weather warms up. And if you're anything like me, you may like to see what's trending among other shoppers. Amazon makes it a breeze to discover which dresses are most popular with its customers.

But let's be real: It's hard to know whether all those glowing five-star reviews are genuine. Our team of shopping editors wanted to know which dresses live up to the hype, so of course we did what we do best — bought them and tested them ourselves. Amazon's bestsellers list does change often, but we tried 11 of the most popular styles that often pop up there. Keep reading for our (brutally) honest, no-filter thoughts on the bestselling styles below.

This go-anywhere piece has a breezy design that'll keep you cool on hot summer days. Senior Deals Writer Britt Ross, left, says she absolutely loves how comfortable it is. She says it's easy to move around in, though she does suggest adding a belt or wrapping a sweater around your waist to give it a bit of shape. The looser frock is definitely on the casual side, but Britt says it's easy to "dress it up a bit by swapping tennis shoes for some boots, wedges or nice sandals — I like how versatile it is."

Deputy Editor Izabella Zaydenberg finds it comfy enough to wear all day, though she says because it's so casual-looking, she would likely just wear it while running errands or to the beach. One of her favorite features? Functional pockets! Plus, she says it hardly wrinkles at all, making it a fantastic choice for travel. "I had it in its package for a while, and it didn't have a single wrinkle on it when I took it out. It's been on a hanger ever since, so I've been able to keep it fairly wrinkle-free," she says.

Home Editor Lisa Schweitzer (left) and Senior Health Commerce Writer Laura Williams tried this elevated T-shirt dress, and while they found it comfy, that's where the compliments stopped. "This dress is fine, not awful, not great. I might wear it casually for work from home or errands on the weekend," Lisa says. "It's functional as a nicer-looking thing to wear out and about when I'm running errands or running after my kids," Laura agrees. "I like the pockets and it's cute enough, although I wouldn't call it super flattering."

The dress features a waist tie, allowing you to cinch it in and showcase your figure. Laura likes the roomy side pockets but says the design might appeal more to younger buyers. "I think some people would classify it as 'young.' I'm 43 this month and I'm sure some people my age wouldn't want to wear it, but I actually like the fit and style," she shares. Both testers said the price was right for the quality, though they weren't keen on the fact that it can't go in the dryer. "It says to hang dry, which basically makes it non-functional for me," says Laura.

I tried out this tank top dress and didn't have high expectations when I first opened it. It looks nicer on my body than I anticipated, but it's still not something I'd typically reach for. I did appreciate that the V-neck isn't too low and the hemline isn't overly short, but I wish there was more room in the armpits as it feels a tad restrictive. The material could definitely be softer, and while I probably wouldn't wear it out for everyday errands, it could work as a swimsuit cover-up.

Shopping Director Jeanine Edwards, left, also tried it. "I don't think this dress is particularly stylish or trendy, but I don't think it's supposed to be," she says. She likes that it's loose and flowy, which helps hide any lumps and bumps, but agrees with me that the poly-blend material isn't great. "It really isn't breathable. It would be fine at the beach where I would be getting wet to cool off anyway, but I probably wouldn't reach for it on a humid NYC summer day because I'd be afraid I'd sweat right through it, it'd stick to me and also become see-through." Overall, we both thought the dress felt pretty cheap, and neither of us would pay more than its $20 price tag.

I was drawn to this strapless sundress because it reminded me of that iconic terrycloth Juicy Couture dress that Sarah Jessica Parker wore on an episode of Sex and the City. Sadly, I was a bit let down by the lack of heft and structure. It's made from a lightweight polyester/spandex blend that's thinner than I expected. While it's not see-through, I can't help but feel it's just a tad flimsy, especially around the ruching and elastic band at the top. It didn't slip down when I wore it, but I can see it stretching out over time.

Also worth noting: The fit really varies depending on your body type. Gifting Editor Amanda Garrity, left, tried it too. At 5'1", she found that the dress hit at her knees, which was a bit long for her preference. "For my figure, it's not flattering. I'm petite, but I have a larger chest for my size and I think that's really obvious with this dress," she says. I have a smaller bust and didn't have any problems in that area, but I'm 5'9" and I felt the dress was a bit too short for my comfort level. Neither of us will be wearing it out and about, but since it's so lightweight and easy to throw on, we'll both keep it on hand as a swimsuit cover-up.

If you're on the hunt for a figure-flattering dress that's a bit more modest, check out this wrap dress. The midi (or maxi, depending on your height) has ample coverage despite the side slit. "I thought it would present more of an issue than it actually did. It miraculously stayed together while I walked around a college campus and went up and down stairs," says AOL Commerce Editor Kate Ellsworth, left. I also didn't have any trouble walking around in it.

We both agreed that the top of the dress isn't the most stylish (Kate describes it as "looking like scrubs") but there's a hidden button at the V-neck, so you choose how much skin you want to show. Kate found that the high neck helped keep everything in check throughout the day. As for me, I have a smaller bust and the button didn't make much of a difference — I felt equally covered whether or not I used it. And while we're not the biggest fans of the dress for our personal styles, I think it's a lovely option for anyone looking for a modest, affordable dress to wear to church or the office.

This cocktail dress inspired decidedly mixed opinions from our testers. Shopping Manager Julia Webb, left, who is on the taller side, finds the cut true to size. "I love the folded shoulder detail — it felt interesting without being overly dramatic," she adds. Julia says she would use a belt to cover the elastic part that cinches the dress at the top, but "would wear this for a dressy occasion and could also see myself tossing it on for a work event or happy hour."

On the flip side, Commerce Editor Janelle Randazza, who is 5'2", advises petite and curvy women to be cautious. "This is not for a woman with a petite torso. There's too much fabric in some areas and then there's too little in others. The dress is decidedly anti-booty and I was disappointed that the cut wasn't appreciative of my six months of spin classes and squats. Instead, I had a pool of fabric bunching on top of my bum," she explains. However, she was impressed by how comfortable it was and the fact that it didn't wrinkle, even after falling behind an ottoman for a few days.

"I might start a petite woman advocacy group," Janelle, right, tells us after trying on this dress. Laura, who's a tall 6 feet, also had reservations about the design. "Honestly, I can't stand the fit. It's not flattering at all." Although she found the dress comfy, she wasn't a fan of the high slit. "It's weirdly placed, so it's not like it highlights your legs while you're standing or walking," she explains. The adjustable straps don't quite solve the fit issues, Laura says. "It feels like a sack dress. There's no waist definition and it just hangs. I just feel like it highlights all the wrong things."

"I'm 5'2 and 130 pounds, and I'm a pretty straightforward size 4," Janelle shares. "I also work out six days a week, so I'm pretty fit. The dress still made me look stocky. And there was too much fabric where the black top and the printed bottom met, so I had bunching where, ostensibly, an extra 2 inches of torso should have been." She says her husband described it best: "You look like you're 10 years older than you are, but you're trying to look 10 years younger."

Jeanine, left, considers this flowy T-shirt dress an everyday staple but cautions that the material makes it hard to dress up. It's on the shorter side, so she thinks it might look a bit off with heels, but says it would be adorable paired with a denim jacket and some cute flats or sneakers. Although she doesn't find the relaxed fit particularly flattering, she appreciates that it isn't too tight: "It was good for hiding my tummy."

I tried this one too, and I get what she means. Even though it's roomy and flowy, it doesn't quite do my figure any favors. I do appreciate that the dress has pockets and like how it looks with my hands in them. But I don't think that I'll actually put anything in them because that pulls the fabric down and makes the shape of the dress look weird and clunky. Since it's comfy and loose-fitting, I can see myself lounging around the house in it or wearing it out for a quick errand, but probably not anything else.

We all love a comfy, airy dress, but this oversized shirt dress might be a bit too roomy. "It really feels like I'm wearing a bed sheet — it had no shape to it at all and made me feel bigger than I really am," says Executive Editor Nicole Sforza, right. She belted it to stop feeling like she was drowning in fabric. Britt had to do the same; without it, "My husband said I reminded him of Scrooge in a nightgown," she says.

While the sizing is off for Britt, she says the quality is decent for the price and she likes the soft cotton fabric. She gives it a five out of five on the comfort scale but says it's just way too baggy. Nicole echoes those thoughts: "I could see that it might look chic on the beach on the right person, but as a proper dress, I didn't find it stylish at all. When I'm sitting down it looks fairly cute, but when I stand up, the amount of fabric is overwhelming."

This wrap dress was another miss with our testers. Nicole, right, tells us, "I just felt unattractive in this — it kind of clung to my hips and just felt like a $10 dress." Jessica Dodell-Feder, our home and garden editor, echos those sentiments: "The fabric looks really cheap to me. It's very obviously synthetic and feels thin and silky, but not in a good way." She found the V-neckline a tad too deep, which made her bra peek out, though she did appreciate the flowy bottom. "I tend to hold my weight in my midsection, so I avoid thin dresses like this because I don't like how they cling. This one had a decent level of swishiness."

Nicole also likes the flowy bottom but says the dress is shorter than she prefers. And while she finds the fabric fairly breathable, "the top is clingy, so it negates the breathability." She ended up wearing it to a funeral because she needed a last-minute black dress. "I wore it with a black cardigan and it felt appropriate for the occasion, but I wouldn't say I felt good in it. I felt like I was wearing something a 15-year-old would wear, not a 50-year-old."

How's this for a review? "This is one of the worst dresses that's ever been on my body," says Kate, left, adding that she looked like Boo from Monsters Inc. "I looked like a box, but a light breeze would cling the fabric to my body." While she says the fabric is soft and easy to move in, she says it "sticks to your body and shows EVERYTHING. You could see bra lines, nipples, underwear lines, my belly button, you name it."

I didn't hate it quite as much as Kate, but I understand where she's coming from. The fabric is soft, but I agree that it's very thin — my striped version might even turn see-through on a sunny day! It's also pretty short on me, so I wouldn't even wear it to run errands for fear of giving people a show if I have to bend over. The silver lining? Given how comfortable and lightweight it is, I think it will make a perfect sleepwear option for warm summer nights.
