The European Commission on Monday said it is in contact with Spanish and Portuguese authorities after a massive power outage caused blackouts across the Iberian Peninsula.
"The commission is in contact with the national authorities of Spain and Portugal ... to understand the underlying cause and the impact of the situation," a spokeswoman said in Brussels.
"There are protocols in place to restore the functioning of the system," she added.
Power grids across Spain and Portugal dropped at around 12:30 pm (1030 GMT) on Monday, causing trains to stop, according to Spanish railway company Renfe.
Authorities are racing to restore electricity to the affected areas.
