NEW DELHI:

Rajya Sabha

MP

Priyanka Chaturvedi

on Thursday took a potshot at

Union home minister

Amit Shah over his fiery debate with her TMC ally

Saket Gokhale

in the Upper House.
"The House is being adjourned continuously because the home minister will take one day to recover from Saket Gokhale's speech in the House yesterday. No issues were addressed in the House today," the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader told news agency ANI.
The discussion on the functioning of the home ministry in the Rajya Sabha turned heated on Wednesday as treasury benches strongly objected to "objectionable" remarks made by TMC MP Saket Gokhale.
While initiating the debate, Gokhale criticised Amit Shah and the ministry’s operations, prompting Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to take strong exception to what he described as repeated "personal observations and remarks" against Shah.

The chairman directed the removal of these comments from the records and stated that he would deliver his ruling on the matter on Thursday.
During his speech, Gokhale accused the home ministry of misusing

central agencies

like the CBI and NIA to target opposition-led governments and individuals critical of the BJP-led Centre.

Despite repeated interventions from the chair, urging him to withdraw certain remarks, Gokhale refused, leading to the expunction of terms deemed "unparliamentary" from the proceedings.
"MHA feels that the Union government is the sole representative of the republic and the states don't mean anything. MHA has become a force for battling against states and any person who tries to disagree with the Union government," Gokhale said.
He took exception to MHA, through a notification, expanding BSF's patrolling jurisdiction on the border in Bengal and Punjab, and said it marked transgression of the authority of states.
Gokhale claimed that West Bengal was being unfairly treated regarding central funds and highlighted that the Aparajita Bill, passed by the West Bengal assembly following the brutal rape of a medical student in a Kolkata hospital, was still awaiting approval from the home ministry.
The TMC MP further alleged that the CBI had registered over 6,900 cases in Bengal, prompting Amit Shah to intervene, clarifying that the discussion was on the MHA, while the CBI does not fall under its jurisdiction.
Shah further accused Gokhale of misleading the House, stating that the cases cited were not all related to corruption and that the information presented was inaccurate.
"Many of them were related to poll violence registered at the instance of Supreme Court and high court. Victims had approached courts after the state government took no action on their complaints," Shah said.
