The co-leader of Germany's The Left was jubilant after exit polls on Sunday projected the hard-left party to nearly double its share of the vote in parliamentary elections, with 8.5% to 9% of the vote.
“The Left Party lives on,” Jan van Aken told a cheering crowd in Berlin.
The party suffered a damaging split in late 2023, when one of its best-known lawmakers decided to set up her own party.
Co-party leader Ines Schwerdtner spoke of the “comeback of the year” and announced her intention to be a “firewall” against the right in the coming years.
In the last elections in 2021, the party won 4.9% of the vote.
