Mets Announce Trade Before Yankees Game

The New York Mets and New York Yankees will begin their first Subway Series of the 2025 MLB season on Friday. While the matchups between these two teams are always highly anticipated, this season brings the most intrigue in years. This is because of superstar outfielder Juan Soto.

Helping lead the Yankees to an American League pennant last season, Soto then left in free agency for a historic 15-year, $765 million deal with the Mets. This has him bracing for significant boos from the Bronx crowd on Friday.

Both the Mets and Yankees enter this series atop their respective devisions, and the former made a trade prior to the series opener.

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Jose Castillo (66).

In an official announcement on Thursday, the Mets revealed that they had bolstered their organizational pitching depth. More notably, they addressed their lack of left-handed pitching.

"We have acquired LHP Jose Castillo from Arizona in exchange for cash considerations," the team announced on X. "In a corresponding move, RHP Kevin Herget has been designated for assignment."

Season-ending injuries to A.J. Minter and Danny Young have left the Mets in significant need of left-handed relief pitching. While his numbers are not great, the Mets are seemingly hopeful that Castillo can help fill that void.

In five appearances for Arizona this season, Castillo posted an abysmal 11.37 ERA. The 29-year-old surrendered 10 hits and eight earned runs in just 6.1 innings pitched. For his career, he owns a 5.21 ERA in 45 appearances, all of which have come out of the bullpen.
