‘Modani’ vs ‘MEGA’: Jairam Ramesh takes a swipe at PM Modi’s US diplomacy

Jairam Ramesh takes a swipe at PM Modi’s US diplomacy

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh

NEW DELHI: Congress leader

Jairam Ramesh

has taken a sharp dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his “MEGA” remark following his meeting with US President Donald Trump, suggesting that the real equation to consider is “Modi + Adani = Modani”.

Ramesh’s critique: ‘The only equation that counts is Modani’

Ramesh’s criticism came after PM Modi, during his US visit, coined “MAGA + MIGA = MEGA”, linking Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) with his own “Make India Great Again” (MIGA) vision. The Congress MP, however, dismissed the branding exercise, pointing to what he calls a deeper connection between Modi and billionaire businessman Gautam Adani.

“Actually, the only equation that counts is Modi + Adani = Modani,” Ramesh wrote on X, implying that business interests, rather than diplomacy, drive Modi’s engagements.

Modi’s MEGA pitch: A US-India partnership for prosperity

Earlier, PM Modi framed his “MEGA” formulation as a symbol of India and the US forging a strong economic and strategic alliance.

"President Trump often talks about MAGA. In India, we are working towards a Viksit Bharat, which in the American context translates into MIGA. And together, India and the USA have a MEGA partnership for prosperity!" Modi posted on X.

The visit marks Modi’s first trip to the US since Trump’s second-term inauguration last month, making him one of the earliest world leaders to meet the newly re-elected President.

Trade, defense, and an algebraic nod

Beyond the verbal sparring, the India-US summit saw the launch of major economic and defense collaborations. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced:

  • Mission-500: Aiming to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.
  • US-India Compact for the 21st Century: A military and technology partnership to boost commerce and defense cooperation.

In a lighter moment, Modi also displayed his flair for mathematical metaphors, referencing algebra while discussing India-Canada ties in the past.

“He first likened Indo-Canada relations to (a+b)² = a² + b² + 2ab.”

Politics or branding? The debate continues

While Modi’s US visit has been framed as a diplomatic win, Jairam Ramesh’s remarks reflect ongoing political tensions at home. With opposition leaders frequently questioning Modi’s ties to corporate giants, the ‘Modani’ vs. ‘MEGA’ debate is set to become another flashpoint in India’s political discourse.
